The girls each have a library card and we make one trip to the library a week to choose books. H thinks it is fabulous because it will hopefully spark an interest in books. I don't like books really (shush - don't tell the kids). I agree with H but admit that the library trips are a selfish "time-filler." The more time we spend out of the house, the tidier the house is. And that is a BIG PLUS! It is ok to be selfish sometimes & have ulterior motives. Don't judge.
They take the selection process very seriously for people who can't read. I've read each book about 15 times since.
My parents did the same thing with me, and now that I look back on it, neither of them reads anything besides the morning newspaper, but, I LOVE reading. Have since I was little and I remember always being excited for a trip to the library or to the book-mobile cart at school. My mom got me a monthly book order subscription for kids(not sure they still do those any more) when I was in first or second grade and I LOVED getting a book in the mail and then I'd excitedly pick my next book for the following month. I might have loved reading anyway, but I do remember that my love started with my parent's encouragement, so....ramble, ramble....I think this is a great idea for the girls.
